If you are searching for a budget friendly IPS display gaming monitor that comes with that zero frame bezel-less design and vibrant colors then ACER R240HY tops the list for the most affordable yet good quality IPS display monitor.
One of the best-selling affordable monitors on Amazon, the Acer R240HQ is proving to be popular with many buyers. While not technically a “gaming” monitor, we had to take a look at it to see how it would perform for someone on a budget looking to possibly use this for gaming.
As it currently stands, there are over 2,500 reviews on Amazon, with an average rating of 4.3 out of 5 stars. With this kind of rating, obviously something that Acer is doing is sitting well with customers, and it can’t just be the low price.
One of the best things about the Acer R240HY is the performance and quality it provides you with at such an amazing price. Though a number of different manufacturers are offering IPS panels at a similar price, it’s always good to see Acer’s name on that list.
To start off, the IPS panel is really nothing special.
Acer R240HY’s IPS panel has a 100,000,000:1 contrast ratio, which is great if true. It’s not easy to prove contrast ratios from manufacturers, but if you forget about the number for a while, and judge the display for how it actually looks, it performs pretty well.
It features a default rate of 60Hz, which is fairly average for monitors, but on the low side for gaming. You can use your GPU’s NVIDIA settings to create a custom profile and set it to 75Hz (technically overclocking the monitor), but it will not go above 60Hz through the monitor’s settings.
It’s nice to see the panel capable of running at 75Hz, even if it is missing out on other redeeming qualities, such as HDR.
The monitor gives you a decently vivid picture for gaming. This kind of picture can be expected from an IPS panel, but again, considering the price point, it can be said that the unit overdelivers.
The whites are bright and the blacks are true and deep. Also, with budget friendly monitors you can sometimes expect to get a yellow or grey tint on the screen, but luckily that is not the case with this model.
Acer R240HY also provides an amazing performance on all the important specs for a proper gaming monitor including-input lag, response time and refresh rate. The units input lag amounts to 4ms GTG as stated on the specifications of the display.
Combine the input lag and response time with a 75hz overlocked refresh rate and you have a display that is as smooth as it can get.
For the downside, the only issue that you might encounter is the issue of light bleed, send especially when gaming in a dark room or in dark scenes. However, this problem is very common among IPS monitors. Hence, if it does not bother you much then it would not be a big issue.
For a gamer, the R240HY works well enough for many people who have reviewed it. While it doesn’t have the refresh-rate typically found on gaming monitors, it does have thin bezels allowing it to be a contender for a multi-monitor setup. Considering many consoles are limited to 60 FPS anyway, this monitor makes a good candidate for console gaming.
Features / Design
One of the best features of this unit is that it features the Acer’s innovative “Flicker-less Technology,” that helps to reduce standard screen flickering. This can be very useful for people who spend hours sitting in front of monitors as screen flickering is one of the main causes of eye pain and eye strain during extended computer use.
Just like most of the Acer monitors, this one too has a very stylish and sleek design. The board is housed in a bezel free (slim, about 0.25 inches), shiny square plastic casing, and raised by a ring-shaped stand that allows you to tilt the panel up to 20 degrees. However, easy pivoting, height manipulation and easy pivoting is not allowed by the ring stand. You are not provided a tilt angle range of –5 to 15 degrees.
The panel on the other hand is a 24 inch fairly standard sized panel. It features full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and a standard 16:9 aspect ratio. Acer decided to compliment this specific screen with an anti-glare screen covering and the unit works at a maximum 250 nits of brightness.
A function strip was included by the company at the base of the unit that features 5 standard settings buttons (contrast, brightness, etc.) as well as a power switch. The unit weighs around 6.5 pounds and measures 21.3 x 7.3 x 16 inches.
Also, the unit features DVI, HDMI and VGA input ports. A headphone jack is also included. It does not feature any audio peripherals, USB ports or a DisplayPort input option.
View / Ports
Ports on the Acer R240HY include: VGA, DVI, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and an HDMI input.
The Acer R240HY is a great choice if you want a monitor that is stylish and budget friendly.
Being one of Amazon’s best-selling monitors, the R240HY is popular for being a good monitor at a great price.
Even though the 24 inch IPS monitor does not come with a lot of features such as DisplayPort inputs and USB ports, it does offer good solid colors and gray scale performance.
If you are looking to use this monitor for gaming, you might be better off with something allowing a higher refresh rate, or adaptive sync. But if you are a console gamer (especially on the PS4 or Switch) which don’t have FreeSync, this monitor makes a good candidate.
