Acer XFA240 Front

The goal of a computer tech guru is to find computer parts that are both affordable and have all the necessary features.

Most companies often substitute features with the range of prices.

The consumer is therefore stuck in limbo because they then have to make a choice, either to go with cheap and affordable or with expensive and powerful.

With the rise in technology, it is becoming easier to acquire computer equipment that offers a range of benefits. Such is the case with Acer’s Predator series that offers solutions for the high-end market without any consequences to quality.

144 Hz are becoming incredibly affordable and available to a wider market.

Image Quality

A more advanced use of the product would require you to have a monitor that can stand the load. Not only does the Acer XFA240 provide you with amazing picture quality but also cutting-edge response time.

Customizing it to a gaming CPU can be the best combo you have ever wished for. The monitor is based on a TN panel with a 350-nit peak brightness, a 1000:1 static contrast ratio, 8-bit color depth (6-bit + 2-bit FRC), and 160°/170° viewing angles. This means it is ever ready to make your gaming experience worthwhile.

Furthermore, the monitor has a 1080p resolution, which on a 24” screen looks as in-depth as it can get. Imagine playing God of War 2 and completely flabbergasted at the crystal-clear picture quality you receive. You’d remember the purchase as one of the best you have ever made.

4k is always a better option than 1080p. However, it requires more processing power. 144 Hz might just not prove to be enough and can be demanding on your CPU. This is not the case with 1080p monitors that are just a bit less in quality, but are still the second best.

4k has better colors than 1080p monitors and they provide the best response time you can get. 1ms is the recorded response time of the Acer XFA240, which means no lag in color changing and definitely an out-of-the-world experience with a sci-fi game/ movie.

Gaming Performance

Ever been in a situation where your monitor froze at the most crucial moment in a game? The constant lagging for high-end games has been a nuisance for gamers for years, but thanks to the new 144Hz monitors, all hope is restored. The Acer XFA240 offers a 1ms lag time that is not noticeable to the naked eye. This means there is no interruption to gameplay and you can play non-stop for hours without having to pause the screen.

The chance of a headache is very slim when you take into account that the monitor is flicker free. There is no use of PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation) to regulate brightness which means you can play long hours in the night as well. Often, there are articles online telling you not to and how it has a negative impact on eyesight. The low blue-light filter built into the monitor helps prevent eye strain, provided that it is enabled. You can happily binge play your favorite game the entire night and not worry about getting blind.

The FreeSync technology removes screen tearing and stuttering by allowing the monitor to change its refresh rate. This then allows for VRR or Variable Refresh Rate that helps prevent against that problem when playing high-graphics games. VRR works best with most AMD and Nvidia (GTX 10-series and RTX 20-series) graphics cards.

The Acer XFA240’s VRR range for AMD cards is 48-144Hz/FPS (Frames Per Second) over the normal display port and 48-120Hz over HDMI. You will never expect any lag while playing online unless your internet speed is at fault. For Nvidia cards, VRR is supported only via Display Port with a 48-144Hz range.

AMD LFC (Low Frame rate Compensation) is also supported, which means that even when your FPS rate drops below 48 and FreeSync stops working, the display’s refresh rate will double or triple the frame rate. This increases the chances of a smoother and a more balanced performance.

Standout Features / Design

The monitor is designed to fulfill all your gaming needs. Certain games require certain shortcuts or hotkeys that are needed for swifter gaming experience. The Acer XFA240 has a total of six hotkeys! That’s right. All of these provide a shortcut for the following functions:

  • Swapping between game modes when you are tired of playing the originals and want to try something new.
  • Adjusting the Overdrive setting for better performance.
  • Opening the OSD (On-Screen Display) Menu which allows you to quickly explore gaming options present in the game.
  • Changing the input source.
  • Adjusting the volume based on your liking.
  • Turning the monitor on/off.

Along with the hotkeys, the product also offers advanced picture adjustments such as gamma presets and 6-axis hue/saturation. There is also the option of ‘Black Level’ which can be adjusted to meet the gaming requirements for a dark-themed game. Most players complain about having lower visibility when it comes to night time in certain games. This problem is completely eradicated in this product.

Acer XFA240 Rear

The Acer XFA240’s display offers full ergonomic support with up to 150mm height adjustment, -5°/35° tilt, 90° pivot, and +/- 60° swivel. It’s also VESA mount compatible with 100 x 100mm holes. It’s slim and smart with an option to adjust it according to your visibility and height. Connectivity options include a Display Port 1.2, an HDMI 1.4 with MHL support, and a Dual-Link DVI-D, which is more than you can ask for. All of these ports offer you great flexibility for external connections. There are also two 2W built-in speakers and a headphone jack that provides top-notch sound quality.

Conclusion

All in all, the Acer XFA240 has amazing colors with all the amazing features that a gamer can dream of. However, there are some issues that have been reported about this product online.

These include color degradation at 144Hz, and Nvidia controls automatically reverting settings back to default.

Such bugs are fixable with a little extra effort, but still you receive more than what you paid for.

Summary

Those in the market for an entry-level monitor will be impressed by the capabilities offered on the XFA240. While no longer sold by Acer in North America (as of Feb 2019), you can pick up this still-capable G-Sync monitor for cheap on Amazon or eBay. Due to it’s lower price tag it would make a great gift as well.
