TCL is a very popular TV brand in North America. TCL has been around since the past 35 years and it has a huge number of buyers who trust the company to provide them with high quality, stylish products that won’t disappoint.
The TCL 49S405 49-Inch 4K Ultra HD is one of the most popular TVs manufactured by the brand. It comes with a number of amazing features and offers a great performance at a shockingly low price. However, it does have a few minor issues.
We’ll be discussing all of that in the review below, so you can decide whether the unit is worth your money or not.
The unit delivers all your desired content with over 500,000 TV episodes and movies, accessible through a basic and friendly interface in a sleek, modern design. It offers you 3840 x 2160 resolution. It supports HDR10 and no other HDR formats (such as Technicolor HDR or Dolby vision). It also features TCL’s Clear Motion Index which helps the picture to appear smoother. The panel has a refresh rate of 60Hz. The unit offers a low lag time in Game Mode, with a response time of about 15.1 milliseconds. This would be appreciated by any gaming enthusiast. The unit offers good color accuracy as compared to its competitors with the same price range.
However, one of the problems of the unit is its issue with backlight consistency. Though the difference is not very noticeable, but you might find that the corners are darker than the rest of the picture. However, this shouldn’t be much of a problem because the difference is very subtle.
Another problem you might encounter is its issue with flaring in dark scenes. You might find unwanted halos around brightly lit images and the darker parts of an image might appear to be over illuminated while watching high-contrast scenes.
Roku television makes it very easy for users to stream movies of their choice and browse the internet. The friendly interface of Roku makes it easy for users to navigate and switch from one streaming app to another or switching between your OTA antenna and Blu-ray player. Also, it is very easy to navigate back to the home screen with just a press of a button. There are no submenus on the TCL 49S405, which can at times be confusing for users.
Roku features a very simple and basic interface and it has a huge number of content channels and streaming services. You can expect to find Amazon Video, Netflix, Hulu and Google Play. Furthermore, it also features premium channels such as HBO, Showtime, Starz and streaming channels from major networks such as CW, Fox, CBS. It offers you both free and paid content with a number of apps you can browse. The wide range of content makes this feature amazing.
The TV measures 43.7″ x 25.3″ x 3 without a stand and weighs 25.4 pounds. It has the same basic design that almost all TCL S-series models come with, glossy, black plastic bezels along with a matte black cabinet that stores all the internals of the unit. It can be mounted on a wall with a 200-millimeter VESA mount.
The TV comes with its own stand. The stand consists of a pair of triangular plastic feet. The plastic feet can be attached easily with a screwdriver, and once attached the total depth of the unit measures 8.5 inches. The left side of the chassis consists of various TCL connections. It features 3 HDMI ports including one with ARC support that can be used for external audio. It also has a digital audio port, a single USB 2.0 port and a coaxial connector for antenna.
The rear panel consists of inputs for composite sound and video. The TV also features a built in 802.11 Wi-Fi, it also includes an Ethernet port which is very convenient if you want a wired connection instead. The unit comes with an adequate amount of selection ports and connections. However, once you connect a game console, Blu-ray player and soundbar you’ll probably run out of ports for more connections, hence you might want to buy a cheap HDMI switcher.
With an input lag time of 14ms for 1080p content, and 15ms for 4K content, the TCL 49S405 is decent enough to be used for general 60Hz casual gameplay.
Thankfully there is no 120Hz mode, where input lag times would make more of a difference (more frame lags per second), so this makes the TV an ideal candidate for console and other types of gaming limited to 60 FPS.
View / Ports
Ports on the TCL 49S405 include:
- 3 HDMI 2.0 with HDCP 2.2 (one with HDMI ARC)
- 1 USB (media player)
- Composite video
- Optical digital audio output
- 3.5 headphone jack
- RF (antenna)
The TCL 49S405 is a great choice for movie lovers and gamers who are looking for a TV that comes with a short lag time. The TV has something for almost everyone. The 4k TV with HDR comes with an attractive body and an overall good performance. It won’t cost you an arm and a leg too, especially when compared to other Korean TV brands. Though it lacks ports and good backlighting but considering the price it comes at, it’s still a good catch, as these issues are minor.
Considering you can find the TV for around $250 on Amazon or eBay, it’s hard to find things to complain about for such an affordable unit. It’s no mystery why thousands of reviewers on Amazon have been blown away by what this TV brings to the table for it’s price. We would definitely recommend this as a great TV for someone on a budget.

TCL 49S405 – Final Ranking
The TCL S405 49″ is one of the best and most-populat entry level TV’s on the market. It provides an adequate picture quality with low input lag and 4K resolution, making it a good choice for couch gamers who want to sit a bit further back and relax while gaming. While the viewing angle isn’t the best, and the brightness suffers when compared to better offerings from Korean/Japanese brands, it’s a good enough set for most people who don’t mind closing the blinds.
